Rachel and Janet are close friends with different personalities: Rachel is impulsive and free-thinking, whereas Janet is subtle and wise. Janet, who is older than Rachel, is married and has two daughters, though her marriage is somewhat stale and is marred by an affair with a colleague, Andy (Nicholas Gleaves). Rachel does not have a family, but was involved in a tempestuous and unstable relationship with a barrister, Nick (Rupert Graves), who Rachel discovers is already married with children and is a serial womaniser.
